USB-C dock with dual HDMI: what actually works on the road

A USB-C hub that "does HDMI" is one screen. Dual HDMI is a different job: two external panels from one laptop cable, plus enough Power Delivery that the same cable still charges the machine. Most travel docks lie about one of those. Either the second HDMI drops to a mirror, or the laptop starves because the dock sipped 30W and called it passthrough.

What to look for before you pack it

Dual 4K60 is the useful spec, not "4K" in the title. Confirm the dock is two HDMI outputs, not HDMI plus a DisplayPort that you will not have in a hotel. 100W Power Delivery through the same USB-C host cable so you are not hunting a second socket for the charger. Data ports that are actually 5Gbps, not charging-only leftovers.

Then check the laptop. Windows can usually extend two external desks if the USB-C port drives DisplayPort alt-mode and the GPU allows it. macOS typically mirrors both externals on a lot of dual-HDMI docks — including this one. If you need two unique Mac screens, a dock is not a magic trick. Read the listing, then test on your machine before a client Monday.

• Two HDMI. Dual 4K@60Hz if the laptop can drive it.
• 100W PD on the host cable. The dock should feed the notebook, not drain it.
• Windows: extend. Mac: assume mirror unless you have already proved otherwise.
• A hotel with no monitors: skip the dock and pack a portable panel instead.
